Puerto Viejo is the largest tourist destination on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, known for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches and Rasta influence. It draws travelers from all over the world who come for the town's many faces: a mix of Afro-Caribbean, Bribri and Tico cultures, and, more recently, a community of international hippies. It's a small port town, but visiting it feels like an anthropological experience.

Puerto Viejo also has 20 kilometers of white sand beaches and protected tropical vegetation, due to its proximity to two national parks. The nearby Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge let visitors observe wildlife, on land and at sea, in its own habitat.
