ETHICAL BEACH & RAINFOREST HORSEBACK RIDING TOURS in COSTA RICA

Discover an ethical beach & rainforest horseback riding tour in Costa Rica with Caribe Horse. Meet and ride our beautiful, well-cared-for rescued horses along the stunning beaches and lush tropical rainforest of Puerto Viejo in a small group. Enjoy a safe, authentic and unforgettable adventure while supporting horse welfare.

TOURS & RESERVATION GUIDELINES

To ensure safety, comfort and the well-being of our horses, we kindly ask all guests to follow these guidelines.

For all horseback riding tours, we recommend wearing long pants and closed, comfortable shoes. For safety reasons, backpacks are not allowed during the ride, as branches in the rainforest may get caught. A small waist bag is recommended instead. We also suggest using sun protection and mosquito repellent.

Our experiences are suitable for all riding levels. Helmets are provided and mandatory for riders under 18 years old.

Weight limits are strictly respected to protect the health of our horses:

  • Beach & rainforest tours: maximum 215 lbs / 95 kg
  • Swimming tour: maximum 190 lbs / 85 kg

Please inform us in advance of any health conditions or special requirements.

RESERVATIONS & ETHICAL COMMITMENT

To confirm your reservation, we require a deposit. This is essential to guarantee your booking and to allow us to carefully plan each experience.

Caribe Horse is not a mass tourism operation. Each tour is organized according to the specific needs of our horses, including workload, rider weight and overall balance. For this reason, we operate in small or private groups only.

When a reservation is confirmed, we reserve dedicated time, horses and guides, often declining other requests. Last-minute cancellations or no-shows directly impact the organization and the well-being of our horses.

As a rescue project, every booking contributes directly to the care, nutrition and long-term welfare of our horses, including those who are retired and no longer part of the tours.

We appreciate your understanding and respect for our work, which is built on responsibility, professionalism and ethical horsemanship.

For cancellations or changes, please refer to our cancellation policy.

Considerations to Take into Account

Important Information & Considerations

Caribe Horse is a horse rescue project that, among its different activities, offers ethical and sustainable horseback riding experiences. Our work is based on the care, respect and wellbeing of our horses, together with responsible tourism and respect for the local environment and community.

All horses participating in our Rescue Project have been rescued from different adverse situations and are now part of our family. Through our activities, we are able to provide them with ongoing care, appropriate nutrition, veterinary attention and a safe and respectful environment throughout their lives.

Participating in one of our ethical horseback riding tours or activities directly supports the continued care and wellbeing of the horses in our Rescue Project.

Our horses are carefully trained and selected according to the characteristics and experience of each participant. We use high-quality equipment and work with qualified and certified guides. Our team includes bilingual local guides with certified training and experience, allowing our guests not only to enjoy a safe and well-organized horseback riding experience, but also to learn more about the nature, culture, traditions and local life of the South Caribbean.

We also work with local horse owners and professionals as part of our project, encouraging responsible horse care and supporting the local community.

Reservations & Authorized Operation

Reservations made directly through Caribe Horse are covered by the applicable insurance, legal permits and municipal authorizations of our operation.

All guides and collaborators involved in our experiences operate under the coordination and responsibility of Caribe Horse, and participating horses remain under our established care and veterinary oversight.

Reservations arranged directly with collaborators, guides or other third parties without prior communication and authorization from Caribe Horse are not considered official Caribe Horse reservations. Such arrangements may fall outside our insurance coverage, permits and operational authorizations and may therefore create safety, legal and liability issues for all parties involved.

If you become aware of any reservation or activity being arranged using the Caribe Horse name, horses, facilities or equipment without our knowledge and authorization, we kindly ask you to inform our management.

Planning & Small-Group Operation

Caribe Horse intentionally operates with small groups rather than mass-tourism operations.

This allows us to provide a more personalized experience while respecting the wellbeing of our horses, the needs of our guests, our guides and the characteristics of the local environment.

The trails and beaches of the South Caribbean are not suitable for large groups. Some sections of the route are narrow, beach space may be limited, and conditions can vary depending on the presence of other people, animals and natural obstacles.

For this reason, each reservation requires careful planning based on the type of experience, the number and characteristics of the participants, their age, approximate weight and riding experience, the appropriate horses and the availability of guides.

Last-minute reservations cannot always be accommodated, as adequate preparation and planning are required to ensure the experience is properly organized.

Cancellation Policy

The Cancellation Policy considers the specific characteristics of our operation.

Because our tours are intentionally organized with small groups and each reservation requires individual planning, every confirmed booking represents a specific commitment of horses, guides, time and resources and may prevent us from accepting other guests for the same date and time.

Our cancellation policy is therefore designed to balance the interests of our guests with the operational requirements necessary to maintain appropriate standards of safety, service quality and responsible horse management.

Standard Cancellation Policy

  • 60 days or more before the tour: no cancellation fee.
  • 30–15 days before the tour: 50% cancellation fee.
  • 14–7 days before the tour: 90% cancellation fee.
  • Less than 7 days before the tour: 100% cancellation fee.
  • No-show: 100% cancellation fee.

The cancellation policy applies to individual and group reservations, including cancellations or no-shows involving one or more participants within a confirmed reservation.

A reservation is confirmed for the number of participants originally booked. Any reduction in the number of participants after confirmation may therefore be subject to the applicable cancellation fee.

Peak Periods

A special cancellation policy applies to:

August · September · October · December 23 to March 31 · Semana Santa

  • 90 days or more before the tour: no cancellation fee.
  • 89–60 days before the tour: 30% cancellation fee.
  • 59–30 days before the tour: 50% cancellation fee.
  • 29–15 days before the tour: 70% cancellation fee.
  • 14–7 days before the tour: 90% cancellation fee.
  • Less than 7 days before the tour: 100% cancellation fee.
  • No-show: 100% cancellation fee.

Weather & Sea Conditions

Tours operate rain or shine, as Caribe Horse is located in a tropical rainforest environment. Weather conditions alone do not constitute grounds for cancellation or refund.

Only when weather or environmental conditions create a genuine safety concern for guests or horses may Caribe Horse suspend or reschedule an experience.

Swimming with the horses during the Hippocamp Tours depends on actual sea, weather and visibility conditions, which may change even during the same experience.

If swimming cannot be safely carried out, the experience will be completed with one of our Beach & Jungle horseback riding routes. This does not constitute grounds for cancellation or refund.

Participation Requirements

For the safety of our guests and the wellbeing of our horses:

  • Maximum rider weight: 215 lb / 98 kg for Beach & Jungle experiences. Experiences including swimming have a maximum rider weight of 190 lb / 86 kg.
  • Minimum age: 5 years old for the 1.5-hour experience; 8 years old for the 2.5-hour Beach & Jungle experience; 10 years old for Hippocamp experiences; 12 years old for Half Day and Full Day + Jaguar Rescue; and 14 years old for the regular Full Day, Full Day + Kayak and Top Full Day experiences.
  • Age and weight must be accurately provided at the time of booking. If a guest arrives and does not meet the applicable age or weight requirements, participation cannot be accepted and the reservation will be treated as a no-show, with the applicable cancellation policy applying.
  • Guests must be physically able to participate safely in horseback riding. Caribe Horse reserves the right to refuse or terminate participation when a guest’s physical condition, mobility limitations, intoxication, behavior or any other circumstance could compromise the safety of the guest, other participants, our guides or the wellbeing of our horses. In such cases, no refund will be issued.
  • Two people may not ride the same horse. Each child must ride their own horse with their own saddle. When necessary, the guide may walk alongside the child and keep the horse on a lead.
  • The riding level declared by the guest does not automatically determine the permitted pace. The guide will assess the rider’s actual abilities during the experience and determine whether trotting or galloping is appropriate according to the rider’s real skills, the conditions of the route and beach at that moment, and the composition and needs of the group.
  • Caribe Horse reserves the right to refuse or terminate participation in case of unsafe, aggressive, disrespectful or inappropriate behavior, including participation while under the influence of alcohol or other substances that may affect safe participation. No refund will be issued in such cases.

Acknowledgement of Conditions

By completing and confirming a reservation, guests acknowledge that they have read, understood and accepted these conditions, including the applicable Cancellation Policy and Participation Requirements.
